Augustus Swain Boynton (born: Feb. 15, 1884, Groveland MA; died: May 30, 1978, Meriden CT)

  • Known as "Gus" to his friends and close family
  • I understood the proper spelling of my grandfather's middle name to be "Swain" and posted it that way at this web site from May 31, 1996 until September 11, 2011. On that day, I discovered that both the MIT web site (his college) and his wedding announcement spelled his middle name as "Swaine" and I changed the spelling at this web site. However, the following week I discovered that his gravestone spells his middle name as "Swain" as does his 1947 United States passport. As of September 17, 2011, I've changed the spelling back to the "Swain" that I recalled.

Published Boynton Resources

Boynton ancestors of Augustus Swain Boynton back 30 generations are shown in the Boynton web site: https://www.quine.org/boynton.html which was extracted from the exhaustive Genealogy of the Descendants of William and John Boynton compiled by John Farnham Boynton and his wife Caroline Harriman Boynton and published in 1897. Reprints of this book (#bc0049) in paperback ($45) or hardcover ($57) plus shipping are available from Higginson Book Company, Derby Square, Salem, MA 01970 https://www.higginsonbooks.com/. It is an excellent book - my thanks to Rolfe Bradbury for identifying a current source. Higginson has also reprinted (#bc0046) Betham's History, Gen. & Baronets of the Boynton Family in England, by J. Boynton. 40p. 1884.
