Quine Ancestors and Roots

The Quine ancestors web page traces 10 generations of our Quine family members from the Isle of Man. The Quine family lived in Abbeylands area of the Isle of Man north of Douglas. Farm names included Arderry (1540-1761) and Balafargher (1761-1824) - later renamed Glenville. Information about Manx families is available through the Isle of Man Family History Society. A Quine Family Research Gathering was organized Friday, May 14, 2004, 7:30 pm at Union Mills Methodist Chapel, Isle of Man by Nigel Crowe at: . His Manx Roots web site includes a number of early Quine wills, marriage contracts, deeds, wills, and family trees.

Robert Stanford Quine is our link from the Isle of Man to the United States. He left the Isle of Man at the age of 12 (about 1861) and became a sailor, visiting ports all over the world. Ultimately he settled in Akron, Ohio and did not see the Isle of Man again until he returned at the age of 60 in 1909.

Cloyd Robert Quine photograph My father, Cloyd Robert Quine, grew up in a largely German neighborhood [in Akron, Ohio] and acquired a smattering of the language, with which he would playfully regale me in my youth. He attended Akron's old high school and proceeded straightway to work for a living. When I first knew what he was about he had an office job in a machine shop called the Williams Foundary and Machine Shop. [The Time of My Life page 2 by W. V. Quine, 1985] In 1917 he boldly left the Williams Foundary and founded the Akron Equipment Co. He had to start big, for his business was the manufacture of heavy machinery by heavier machinery: the manufacture of molds for tires... [ibid page 21]. In the early years, the business was also involved in the manufacture of some ice cream processing equipment. C. R. Quine continued to work at the Akron Equipment Company until his death 50 years later. While family legends reported for decades that he had patented a system for the manufacture of ice cream novelties, a search at the U. S. Patent Office records on March 17, 2005 uncovered a patent for an illuminated sign.

The objects of our invention are to produce a new and improved letter in which the means for attaching electric lights shall be made integral with the main body portion, and it also is one of our objects to so attach the letter to the supporting-frame that it shall at all times be convenient to reach all the wires leading to the various portions of the sign, and a further object is to render the sign as nearly impervious to the effects of the weather as possible.

C. R. Quine was also a historian of Akron, Ohio who preserved a local one room school house at his country farm. He subsequently donated the building to the town where it was restored as a museum until (the story goes) it was destroyed by a tornado (perhaps in the 1980's). Quine, C.R. and Quine, H.S. 1951. The Akron Riot of 1900 (Great Akron Riot) [Akron, mimeographed for the compiler] 23 pages, 8 1/2" x 11", illustrated, Precipitated by the alleged rape of a white child by a black man, in 1900 a lynch mob gathered at the Akron jail but was frustrated by the earlier removal of the prisoner to Cleveland. As the disturbance continued shots were exchanged, two small children were killed and the City Hall, jail, and nearby Columbia Hall were burned. The upshot was that the next day the militia arrived to control the citizens, the accused man was brought to Akron, where in a 20 minute trial he pleaded guilty, was sentenced to life imprisonment, and immediately sent to Columbus. Quine gives the full details of the affair together with contemporary photos of scenes and individuals. Harriet (Hattie) Ellis Van Orman Quine (Aug 1, 1874 - 1970)

My mother, Harriet Ellis Van Orman Quine, was born in 1874 (a dark secret while she lived) in Wadsworth, a voillage twelve miles southwest of Akron... Unlike my father, my mother went to college: Buchtel, the nucleus of the eventual University of Akron. Her brother Willard, for whom I was named, taught mathematics there until moving to Denver for his health about 1903. My mother revered him: brilliant, musical, handsome, saintly. I never saw him, but I was made to feel complimented by his name and to look upon mathematics as an admirable pursuit. My mother taught for ten years in the elementary grades at Spicer, one of the Akron public schools, taking pleasure in the children and pride in her way with them. "Never a harsh word..." [The Time of My Life pp. 2 - 3 by W. V. Quine, 1985]. She is buried beside her husband in the Quine family plot at the Glendale Cemetery in Akron, Ohio.
