The Heteronym Page (Douglas Quine)

inspired by: Jon Vahsholtz's http://jonv.flystrip.com/heteronym/heteronym.htm

A Compound Heteronym is my term for a word with two different meanings and pronounciations depending upon where the word is split

My interest in Compound Heteronyms (the best name I could think of after considering: split words, compound dual meaning words, double meaning compound word, compound pun, and compound runon words) dates back years. However, I've not recorded them; this is an effort to start doing so (and I hope to recover some of the gems that have slipped through my fingers). I'd appreciate any further examples. This is my current meagre list:

A String Heteronym is my term for a URL or concatenated nonsense text with two different meanings and pronounciations depending upon where it is split

My interest in String Heteronyms also dates back years. Web site URLs (especially those that you misread at first) are a good source. I'd appreciate any further examples:

A Heteronym is a word that has the same spelling as another word but with a different pronunciation and meaning. These words are sometimes also called homographs.

This is an expansion of Jon Vahsholtz's heteronym web site: http://jonv.flystrip.com/heteronym/heteronym.htm. Jon's interest in heteronyms started on a long drive to Kansas with his family. Needing something to help pass the time, they tried to come up with as many of these words as they could. At the time they didn't even know what these types of words were called, but they came up with 14 examples and thought they had done pretty well. He knew there must be many more heteronyms that they simply hadn't thought of, so he created this page with two purposes in mind.

Jon has been pleasantly surprised at how many people hear about the list, enjoy seeing the collection, and try to think of more words to contribute.

The November 1988 edition of the Smithsonian magazine contained a short article about heteronyms, written by Felicia Lamport. The article isn't available at their website, but Jon tracked the article down and has reproduced it here: http://jonv.flystrip.com/heteronym/smithsonian.htm.

Jon lists the heteronyms using the following format:

wordClass (n) pronunciation #1first definition
pronunciation #2second definition

All heteronyms are not created equal! Your definition of what is acceptable might not match Jon's. Jon has attempted to classify each heteronym using the following class definitions:
